Sruti posed a problem

Shantala’s concert would have been more enjoyable had she maintained a balanced sruti.

In the flute recital of Shantala Subramaniam, accompanied by Anuradha Sridhar on the violin and Saigiridhar on the mridangam, the first item was the Kanada Ata Tala varnam ‘Neranammithi.’ A brief essay of Kannada prefixed ‘Ninnata’ with lively swaras for the Pallavi. She had a problem throughout the concert – from the level of tara sthayi shadjam the sruti went a little lower.

‘Evarani’ in Devamrithavarshini came before she took up the main item in Lathangi.

The alapana was decent except for the sruti. When Shantala played with the long flute in Madhyama sthayi it was quite appealing.

Anuradha’s effort was often more impressive than the flautist's. The chosen song was Patnam Subramania Iyer’s ‘Marivere’ with niraval and swaras.

The thani by Saigiridhar was very noisy during the faster tempo. It was an impressive playing by the ghatam artist.

After this Shantala played ‘Akhilandeswari’ in Dwijavanti, ‘Smarasundaranguni’ in Paras and ‘Nadupai’ in Madhyamavati.
