N. C. Soundaravalli, noted classical musician who carved a niche for herself in the devotional music genre, passed away here on Monday after a brief illness. She was 76.

Trained under illustrious gurus such as Palghat Harihara Iyer, and a disciple of Tiger Varadachari, and later, Maharajapuram Santhanam for nearly two decades, Ms. Soundaravalli was active in the Carnatic music performance circuit for over four decades.

Specialising in devotional music, she cut albums featuring several slokas and verses, including the Parthasarathy suprabatham and Karumari Amman suprabatham that became instant hits.

Ms. Soundaravalli is a recipient of several honours including the ‘Kalaimamani’ title awarded by the State government. She is survived by two sons and a daughter.
