R. Kalyani and Rajarajeswari together presented a vocal concert at the 92 monthly music festival organised recently by the Tiruchi Tamil Isai Sangam. Dr. Kalyani, surgeon at BHEL Hospital, and Rajarajeswari commenced the concert with a virutham on Lord Vinayaga in raga Hamsadhwani followed by the Papanasam Sivan’s song ‘Siddhi Vinayaka’ with kalpanaswaras at ‘Arul Purivaai.’

The next song was on Sai Baba composed by the duo’s guru, Maharajapuram Nagarajan, in raga Basant Bahar, which was well appreciated. The third was a virutham in Mohanam for the song ‘Tamizhe Uyire Vanakkam.’ Dr. Kalyani presented a brief alpana in Suddha Dhanyasi for Ambujam Krishna’s song ‘Azhaga Azhaga’ in Kanta Chapu talam.

Rendered at a fast pace, the rendition of the Thevaram hymn, ‘Madar Madapidium’ in the Yazhmurai pann (in ragam Atana), was a laudable effort. It gave scope for the percussionists to display their skills.

Next was the Virutham for the Bharatiar song ‘Yaamarindha Mozhigaliley’ in ragamalika followed by Kavimani Desika Vinayagam Pillai’s ‘Ethanai Mozhigalil Innisai Paadinalum Ennavo Inba Tamizh Mozhipol Illai’ in ragam Kalyana Vasantham.

Lively session

The main raga chosen was Kalyani and the kriti was ‘Unnai Allal’ by Papanasam Sivan. Dr. Kalyani delivered an elaborate alapana for the kriti. The niraval for ‘Neeye Meenakshi, Kamakshi, Neelayadakshi’ was well handled followed by kalpanaswaras. Anand, on the violin, beautifully followed all phrases and gave a good accompaniment. With planned korvais, the tani avartanam, following the kalpanaswara, was handled by Girish on the mridangam, Gopalakrishnan on the ganjira and Deenadayalu on the morsing, thus making the session lively.

The lighter session consisted of a pacy song in ragamalika, stressing the importance of saving the Tamil language, ‘Minjuthadi Moham’ in Durga composed by Nayagi Swamigal and the popular Thiruppugazh ‘Muthaitharu’ in Shanmukhapriya. The concert concluded with Bharatiar’s ‘Vaazhga Tamil Mozhi’ in Madyamavati.

L.N. Letchumanan, president, Tamil Isai Sangam, presided over the function for which Antuvan was the chief guest. Rengarajan, secretary of the Sangam, offered felicitations.
