This Carnatic vocalist of Bengaluru, Sai Tejas Chandrasekhar, making his debut in Hyderabad Carnatic circles, featured in the annual festival of Sangeetha Kheerasara Sabha, held at Thyagaraya Ganasabha’s mini hall last week, thrilled the audience right with his opening traditional number Natakuranji varnam Chalamela of Srirangam Rangaswami Nattuvanar, displaying his bold voice with good range. Sai Tejas set interesting repertoire adding some rarely heard numbers, which perhaps he picked up from his guru Vidushi Roopa Sridhar.
His concert in the company of Bhatti Pavan singh on violin and Sriaramakrishna on mridangam turned out to be laudable event holding great promise to this man. His voice throw was tremendous. He rendered with crystal clear clarity the breezy numbers too. The Gambheeranata number Jaalandhari was an assertive expression of sahitya displaying niceties in his modulation, going mellow where it needed. At some charanas he moved in high speed while doing different swara groups tailed with words ‘Gambhira Nata’. It was well applauded.

Concert’s major number was mukhari for Yemani Ne a vilambakala kirtana of Subbaraya Sastry. Raga was built in such a fashion that it finally gained majestic appeal. Sometimes he positioned himself at some points till he gave out the best of that phase. The raga rendition style in slow tempo, giving space for rasa mood, some pleading, some pleasurable and so on, was a treat. He reached out to mandra and anumandra sthayis, with clear expression. An Annamacharya number Namo Namo Lakshminarasimha set in Poornachandrika and Cheli Nenetulu Sahintune a javali concluded the recital.
