Music lovers of Tiruchi had a pleasant surprise recently, when they listened to the vocal concert of Geetha Bennett, though they all had come to enjoy her veena concert - as scheduled. The event was organised by R.R. Sabha, Tiruchi.
“I love singing,” she said with a twinkle in her eyes, expressing her joy in rendering a vocal concert. She was accompanied by Bharathy Mahadevan. “Ms. Mahadevan is part of me in my vocal concert,” she said. The line-up included the kritis of eminent musicians in Telugu and Tamil.
The concert commenced with a varnam ‘Viribhoni’ in Bhairavi in khanda jati ata talam. It was followed by Muthuswami Dikshitar’s ‘Ekambaresa Nayikae’ in Karnata Suddhasaveri, Syama Sastri’s ‘Marivere’ in Anandabhairavi set to misra chapu talam and ‘Yarukkuthan Theriyum,’ a composition by Gopalakrishna Bharati in Devamanohari set to adi talam.
Geetha and Bharathy meticulously handled two Tyagraja kritis - ‘Gnanamusagaradha’ in Purvikalyani set to rupaka talam followed by ‘Natti Matta’ in Devakriya, set to Adi talam.
The main song, which lasted for about 35 minutes, was ‘Karthikeya Kangeya’ a composition in Thodi by Papanasam Sivan set to Adi talam.
Tiruchi R. Govindarajan's violin support was well appreciated by the audience. The tani avarthanam by K. Srinivasan on the mridangam was enjoyable.
