S. Vijaya Kumar was honoured for promoting classical arts.

S. Vijaya Kumar, chairman and managing director of Vijay Nirman Co. Ltd., who is widely known as a promoter of fine arts, is professionally from the construction industry. He was one among the seven in the country who were chosen for the Doyen of Industry 2010 Award of the Construction Industry Development Council and was presented by the Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, C. Rangarajan on the March 9 in New Delhi.

Celebrating the event, the Samskruthika Sabha and Sakala Kalakarula Samakhyas comprised nearly a score of cultural bodies led by Viskaha Music, Visakha Music and Dance and Andhra Music Academies of the port city organised a function at Darshini Conference Hall of Hotel Daspalla last Sunday evening.

At the meeting held as part of the function with sadguru K. Sivananda Murty in the chair, former mayor of the city and chairman, Bar Council of India, D.V. Subba Rao, founder-director of the Centre for Policy Studies, Prof. A. Prasanna Kumar, founder president and vice-presidents of VMDA, C.S.N. Raju and V. Seetharamaiah mainly spoke on the occasion. They unanimously opined that Visakhapatnam shares the joy as the couple planned, designed, established and successfully sustained social and cultural projects in the city.

Almost all presidents, secretaries and members of the management committees of all cultural bodies besides scores of artistes and the elite of the city presented shawls and bouquets to Vijaya Kumar and his wife Curie. The sadguru also showered his blessings on the couple.

Mangalavadyam (nadaswaram) by Gurivilli Appanna and party from Simachala Devasthanam and the hilariously poetic compering by Perala Balamurali Krishna were special attractions.
