Do you want to experience the music that once resonated in havelis, those sprawling abodes of the wealthy zamindars of the north? Then just head to Chowdiah Memorial Hall on Friday to experience the magic of ‘Haveli’.
“The [strains of the] sarangi, tabla, and the reverberating bells of the ghungroo in the background and the lingering gaana,mujra and shayari … We are going to have 13 artistes from all to transport you to that forgotten era,” says actor Bhavana, the creative head of Hometown Productions who founded it along with her brother Aravind Ramanna. “We believe there is enough talent around us and all that is needed is the right platform,” says Bhavana. “Havelis were nerve centres of culture, although for each stately home it was music and dance that reigned supreme. We’ve taken the spirit and ethos of the haveli and applied them to our show,” she says.
The group also comes out with Prachaara, a monthly calendar of cultural events taking place in Bangalore and Pune, “an offering to all art lovers from us, available in all the cultural hubs of the city, free of cost.”
The artistes are Bollywood music composer and violinist Deepak Pandit, Odissi dancer Arushi Mudgal, Kathak dancer Rajendra Gangani, vocalist and sarangi player Ustad Fayaz Khan, sitar brothers Rafique and Shafique Khan; saxophonist Raman; drummer Stanley Jeoraj, renowned French pianist Mishko M’Ba, tabla player Arvind Kumar Azad, Grammy winner khartal player Dewo Khan, and kamaicha players Ghewar Khan and Dare Khan.
