The world famous DJ Joel Thomas Zimmerman, better known as Deadmau5 was in India this past week in connection with his debut performance in the country. The 33-year-old Canadian started his three-city tour with a performance in Mumbai, followed by one at Bangalore and the last one in Delhi. Joel who has won 11 awards and sold more than 1.5 million records produces a variety of styles and sometimes other forms of electronic dance music with a wide use of singing voices.
Responding to the questions on email, Deadmau5 said that he had been “waiting for the India tour to materialize for a very long time”, adding, “many of my friends have come here recently and can’t stop raving about it. Finally I am glad that Sunburn and my fans managed to have me over.”
“I have not been exposed to a lot of Indian music but I am a diehard fan of Daler Mehndi and his track ‘Tunak Tunak Tun’,” said the DJ. Asked about improvisations during a live performance, Joel said: “I always have a pre-decided story to convey through the sets but a lot of ‘suddens’ take place. The audience sentiment plays an important part in my set.” Explaining that he preferred open air music festivals to clubs, he stated, “There is this energy like no other when there are thousands of music lovers who come together and move with the music. There is pure love and peace that I can feel when I am playing for huge crowds.”
