Applications invited for ‘Naad Bhed’, a national-level reality show for classical musicians.

It is a reality show for young classical musicians. The society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY), in association with Doordarshan, presents ‘Naad Bhed’, a national-level classical music reality show that aims at promoting and popularising Indian classical music and rewarding the best young practitioners of classical music.

There are six prizes up for grabs – Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Yuva Puraskar (Hindustani vocal), Pandit Ravishankar Yuva Puraskar (Hindustani instrumental), Ustad Alla Rakha Yuva Puraskar (Hindustani accompanist), M.S. Subbulakshmi Yuva Puraskar (Carnatic vocal), Sheikh Chinna Moulana Yuva Puraskar (Carnatic instrumental) and Palghat Mani Iyer Yuva Puraskar (Carnatic accompanist). The upper age limit is 26 and there is no age wise categorisation. Regional rounds of competition will be held at Doordarshan’s 20 regional kendras.

The quarterfinals will be held in Kolkata for Hindustani music, with judges from Sangeet Research Academy, and at Chennai for Carnatic music, with judges from Madras Music Academy.

Actor Shabana Azmi hosts the show. On the judging panel are the likes of T.N. Krishnan, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Begum Parween Sultana, T.V. Shankarnaraynan, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Vedavalli, among others.

The final rounds will be aired on Doordarshan national network. The preliminary audition will start in the first week of August.

The contestants ought to have learnt classical music (vocal, instrumental or percussion, depending on the category in which he/she is going to participate) for a minimum of four years and her/his guru should certify the same. Application fee is Rs. 150.

Winners in each category will receive a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakh and the overall winners (one each) will receive a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh. In addition, SPIC MACAY will facilitate 10 stages across the country for the winners in each category and also one CD release.
