They are here to drive away your blues with music; Chennai-based Blues Conscience, who recently launched ‘Down & Dirty’, their debut album, hope to catch the attention of music-lovers through 14 original tracks.

Blues Conscience has been a part of the city’s music scene for five years and decided it was time to release an album. “We have been working on these things for quite some time,” says Anek Ahuja.

The band hopes its music will lighten up spirits even if it isn’t traditional blues. “You can broadly categorise it under blues but we do have elements of jazz, rock and even a DJ performing,” he says. The album has been produced by Los Angles-based guitarist Ed Degenaro. “He’s given our album an international sound and quality.”

Anek and his band also help support causes through their music. “We try to do something for the environment or the underprivileged,” he says. “We’ve had beach clean ups, charity shows and even played for underprivileged children and distributed toys to them.”

One of the few bands from the city to play the blues, Anek feels that the popularity of the genre has helped them come a long way. With this album he hopes to reach out to a cross-section of listeners. “The message of our music is simple — to spread joy,” says Anek.
