The foot-tapping fourth edition of The Friday Review November Fest is all set to get Bangalore grooving with its exciting line-up. It opens with Indian Ocean's signature fusion and folk rock, and Day 2 features German drummer Carola Grey and her Indian band members in Noisy Mama's jazz-rock show. The fest closes with Mumbai’s Monsorate Brothers recreating Kishore Kumar's magic in an evening of Hindi retro. Catch the November Fest between November 12 and 14 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall.
Indian Ocean
Genre: Folk rock / Fusion
The opening act of the fest this year is the iconic Indian Ocean on November 12, with its new line-up performing for the first time in Bangalore.
The show brings the eclectic Indian Ocean sound to town — music from the subcontinent merging with jazz, rock and Sufi poetry. Since the 90s, when the group came together, Indian Ocean has been at the forefront of desi rock. Featuring Amit Kilam on drums, vocals, gabgubi, recorder and clarinet; Himanshu Joshi on vocals; Nikhil Rao on the guitar; Rahul Ram on the bass guitar and vocals; and Tuheen Chakravorty on the tabla and other percussion instruments.
Noisy Mama
Genre: Indian jazz-rock
German drummer Carola Grey’s new Noisy Mama, recreated from the original jazz/fusion group, now includes Indian musicians. The show on November 13 promises to be an electrifying blend of Indian rhythms and jazz-rock, jazz-funk and rock grooves where Carola’s compositions use Indian ragas with Western harmony. Carola has collaborated with musicians such as Mike Stern, Ravi Coltrane and Stu Hamm, and has been training under Carnatic mridangist T.V. Gopalkrishnan.
The performance will feature Carola on the drums, vocals, and konnakol; John Anthony on the guitar; Palakkad Sreeram on vocals, flute, percussion and konnakol; Biju Paulose on the keyboards and percussion; and Napier Peter Naveen Kumar on the bass.
Monsorate Brothers
Genre: Bollywood retro
On November 14, the Monsorate Brothers will take Bangalore on a nostalgic journey with the songs of Kishore Kumar, known for his range of melodies from romantic songs such as ‘Roop Tera Mastana’ to comic numbers like ‘Ek Chatur Naar’ to the evergreen hits rendered for Dev Anand in films such as Nau Do Gyarah , Guide and Jewel Thief .
The Monsorate Brothers are freelance musicians who have worked with music directors such as Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji and R.D. Burman since 1972. They have performed in the U.S., Holland, the U.K., South Africa and Fiji Islands and have toured with Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar.
