The contributions of Kalki Krishnamurthy to the field of arts and literature and his involvement in the Independence movement were hailed at the presentation of Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Awards here on Thursday.

The awards are annually presented to young, up and coming musicians marking the birth anniversary of Kalki. Singer and violinist Amrutha Murali and violinist Charulatha Ramanujam were the recipients this year.

Leela Samson, Director of Kalakshetra and Chairperson of Sangeet Natak Akademi, said Kalki embodied literature and arts, and was one of the great minds born in the last century. Calling the award an encouragement for the up and coming artists, Ms.Samson said the galaxy of musicians who have received the awards testify their repute. In their acceptance speech, the musicians dedicated their awards to their families and teachers. Gurus of the two musicians were honoured on the occasion.
