Jacqueline Kennedy with Jagdish Mittal

Jagdish Mittal: An Art Connoisseur presents different facets of the life of art historian Jagdish Mittal as he enters his ninetieth year. The book focuses on his art collections, writings and reaches out to art scholars and connoisseurs from India and other countries who have known Mittal closely over the years. Jagdish Mittal’s interest in art began from a young age and later, he studied at Kala Bhavan, Shantiniketan. Mittal and his wife Kamla settled down in Hyderabad in 1953 and for decades, collected Indian art objects to preserve them for posterity. The book describes how, in 1976, they decided to bequeath their art collection to the nation and instituted a public trust — Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Musem of Indian art — in Hyderabad. The museum’s collection includes more than 2000 objects dated between 1B.C and 1900 A.D. The museum has had high-profile visitors and art enthusiasts including Sir Jonas Salk, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Nobel laureates, art historians, collectors, artists and research students.
