Onti Sthambam, the historical monolithic stone pillar, built by the Kalyani Chalukyas during the 11th-12th centuries in the heart of the town, is on the brink of losing its sheen.
The Kalyani Chalukyas are known to have constructed several pillars, including Onti Sthambams in this part of the region as a mark of their victory, valour and grandeur when Kolanupaka was their second capital, according to historians.
Onti Sthambams were built at Nalgonda, Narketpalli, Yadagirigutta and several other places in the district.
The one at Yadagirigutta has already vanished. The Onti Sthambam situated near Malbowli in Nalgonda is gradually losing its radiance.
“The giant and majestic Onti Sthambam in the old town, which has been declared a protected monument, not only reminds us of the grandeur of the Kalyani Chalukyas but also their patronage of art,” says Venu Sankoju, the general secretary of Jaya Mithra, a town-based literary and cultural forum.
Protection of heritage
“All the historical structures built during the erstwhile royal dynasties and nawabs should be fortified and developed,” he says and suggests that adequate funds should be earmarked for their protection as an integral part of the town's beautification plan. “The historical monolithic pillar, an epitome of our vibrant cultural heritage built by the kings of the bygone era, is today eclipsed by the apathy of the present rulers,” deplores G Shyam Sundar, a businessman of the locality.
