Ulaga Tirukkural Kalai Sangamam, an international forum, has organised a function to pay tribute to Tiruvalluvar on April 24. A year ago, Dr. K.P. Chellammal, Tamil teacher and celebrated folk dancer, installed a statue of Tiruvalluvar at her house, 6/35. First Street, Tiruvalluvar Nagar, Kottur. The statue now gets an umbrella to protect it from natural elements. This will be unveiled at 4 p.m. on the day.
A galaxy of Tamil scholars will attend the function that will be marked by recitation competition, cultural programmes and so on. Chellammal, recognised by the State Government for her service as teacher and her efforts in promoting Tirukkural, thinks the statue and the umbrella are modest gestures showing her dedication to the couplet composer. She travels widely presenting Karagattam spreading the messages contained in Tirukkural. She was recently honoured with Dr. Radhakrishnan award and a purse for her life long service to Tamil.
At the function on Tuesday next, Dr. Chellammal will be honoured by Dr. J.G. Kannappan-Vasuki Trust with a title and purse. The function will be presided over by K. Vezhavendan, former Minister. Aranganayakam, former Education Minister, Dr. Vasavan and Prof. Velmurugan will be special guests. For details contact 9941659594.
