Darbha Sriranjani

Darbha Sriranjani of U.S who gave a vocal concert for Swara Tarangini of Vijayawada at Sri Sringeri Peetha Paripalitha Sri Sivaramakrishna Kshetram showing superb talent in all aspects. Sporting an excellent voice she showed extraordinary depth of musical knowledge.

She began her concert with a fine varnam Sarasijanabha in Nata followed by Gajavadana in Kedaram which was finished with fine kalpana swaras. Next she sang Syama Sastri’s Devi Brova Samayamide in Chintamani. This was followed by the sub main item Venuganaloluni in Kedararagowla presented in a sumptuous manner with attractive raga delineation and crisp swaras. After singing Sridhara Pahi (Jayantasri) of Mysore Vasudevachar and Bhogindra Sayinam of Swathi Thirunal in Kuntala Varali, Sriranjani took up Todi for the major item of the concert and sang Thyagaraja’s majestic kriti Kaddanuvariki with excellent manodharmam aspects like raga, neraval and kalpanaswaras. However, the item which brought out Sriranjani’s ample musical depth was the superb ragam, tanam, pallavi rendered in raga Saraswathi. The talam was an intricate one – Khada Triputa which ran in Khandagati. The lyric of the highly intricate pallavi was Sarade – Sugunanidhe – Sangeeta Kala Varade – Vande – Sankaracharya Vinuthe . The execution of the pallavi proved amply the top class laya gnanam of the singer.

The neraval and kalpanaswaras were sung as enchanting ragamalikas. B.V. Durgabhavani, noted violinist presented sweet versions of Saraswathi and Todi. Senior mridangam vidwan and lecturer in the music college was brilliant in following and tani played along with the Kanjira artist K. Srinivas.
