Young dancers presented Andhranatyam on the premises of Krishna Mandir at Seethammadhara, Visakhapatnam recently. Disciples of young exponent of Andhranatyam B. Gopiraj, displayed good grasp of the nitty-gritty of this dance form. This vibrant style reconstructed and popularised by maestro Nataraja Ramakrishna has been of less patronage in the city for some time and now it is beginning to gain the attention of dance learners here. The session opened with pushpanjali an invocatory paying obeisance and the fare also included a sprinkle of Kuchipudi items.

Shailu Nandini Priya stole the show through her refined presentation of chosen numbers. She presented Gangadharavara a part of Sivakaivaram, a temple dance number set to raga Kannada in the cycle of Adi talam with élan. It was a striking piece among the numbers presented on this occasion. The grace and grandeur of Lord Siva and elegance and charms of Ganga’s alluring gait found appealing articulation in her presentation. It offered a yummy taste of Andhranatyam in its classy relish. Jathiswaram, a pure dance number, a mix of jatis and swaram sans sahityam reflected her grasp of choreographical designs in complex patterns. Muddugare Yasoda of Annamayya received an elaborate treatment. A couple of group numbers Dasavatara and Vasantanarthana were notable for remarkable team spirit and neat execution of a matrix of intricate floor designs.

K. Papabai (vocal) Dakshina Murthy on violin and Krishna Murthy on mridangam lent good support. Tamil Kalai Mandram hosted the event.
