Natya Ashwini Kaarthikeyan returned to the stage after nine years with a thematic recital.
Painter, poet, dancer… Ashwini Kaarthikeyan wears many hats. In her thematic recital titled ‘She Who Unspins,' Ashwini has managed to integrate elements of each of these art forms to form a creative whole.
She presented this programme at Bharat Nivas Auditorium in Auroville, Puducherry.
The highlight of the Bharatanatyam performance was the varnam in Thodi, which was choreographed by her guru P.T. Narendran. The varnam depicted her love and longing for Lord Siva.
“The theme highlights the fact that Siva and Shakti are one and the same. I was drawn to the scriptures that emphasise the importance of both the God and the Goddess. Also my love for Lord Siva comes through in this programme,” said the mother of three.
Ashwini returned to the stage after a nine-year break with this solo performance. She resumed dancing when she returned to Chennai in 2009 from the U.S., and trained under P.T. Narendran.
During the break, Ashwini displayed one of her paintings. It depicted a goddess seated on a cow holding a feather (quill) and a paintbrush. “The goddess is my Muse, “said the dancer. She ended her recital with a thillana, choreographed by Rukmini Devi.
