April 29 is marked as the World Dance Day by UNESCO since 1982. Visakhapatnam witnessed a profound exhibition of all dance traditions of Andhra Pradesh in two sessions. First, paraded through some important localities from morning till noon and second performed serially on the dias of VUDA's open theatre Gurajada Kalakshetram from evening. While going through the city and getting the Kuchipudi flag hoisted at as many as 15 community halls and performing dance at slum areas, lecture-cum-demonstrations on all forms of Indian classical dance was delivered by 30 dance gurus invited from all over the country. More than 30 professional artistes of all varieties of dances of A.P were brought to the Gurajada Kalakshetram for showcasing their talents.
The folk dances of Savara of Srikakulam, Kolaatam by women followed by men, Chakka bhajana and Tappetagullu from Vizianagaram, Karagam, Puliveshalu and Budabudakkulu from Visakhapatnam, Garaga and Burrakadha from East Godavari, Dappu, Karra, Hanuman and Pagativeshalu from Krishna districts interspersed in between by many more were notably attractive. The presentation was meticulously organised by the Chairman of its planning and organising committee, Jeevanlal Lavidia, IRS (Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax), Rekhala Krishna Goud, Chairman, Nataraj Music and Dance Academy (Member of International Dance Council, UNESCO) and its founder president, Bathina Vikram Goud, P.G. degree holder of AU, Dance.
Out of all the presentations of classically evolved and well developed styles of Kuchipudi, Siva Sthuthi by P. Saijyothi, Vinayak Koutham, Muddugare and Bhamakalaapalm by Indraja were exhibited well.
Koluvaithiva Ranga Sayee in classical Kuchipudi dance by Lalitha Kumar Guptha seemed to be a showcase of an aesthetically, well balanced nritha and nritya. While all the dance artistes were presented with clothes and shawls, two of their ‘Gurus' got adorned with Jaanapadha Sudhakara Folk Awards.
