It was an event with a difference. That the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, is held in high esteem for his Tamil prowess is well-known. And Bharatanatyam exponent Padma Subramaniam is famous for her extraordinary skills, both as a solo performer and as choreographer of theme-based group events. When the dancer along with her disciples presented Mr. KArunanidhi’s dance-drama, ‘Porvaalum Poovidhazhum,’ literature and art united in happy combination. Incidentally, the dance exponent had presented the show at the Coimbatore Semmozhi conference.

But what raised eyebrows that evening was the presence on the dais of Velukkudi Krishnan and Tiruchi Kalyanaraman, both known for their strong spiritual leanings. It was, however, a smooth affair with Mr. Karunanidhi complementing the knowledge of Velukkudi Krishnan and Kalyanaraman and their Tamil skill and the speakers in turn acknowledging the Chief Minister’s love for literature, including the hymns of Azhwar.
