Lasyapriya an institute run by guru Uma Ramarao presented a dance ballet ‘Parvati Kalyanam’ at Shilpa Kala Vedika on Sivaratri Day, to a pre-recorded voice of vocalist Nitya Santoshini. The music was directed by Nemani Partha sarathi.
The main part of the ballet ‘Parvathi Kalyanam’ was penned by Uma’s grandfather poet Goparaju Subba Rao who was called ‘Mahadeva Sambho’ because of his devotion to Lord Siva.
The songs that were part of the ballet were well written and the sequences of the play made for a fine narrative.
The principal theme was the birth of Parvathi as daughter of Mena and Himavantha, who gave their daughter the name ‘Uma’. She grows up and then desires to get married to Lord Siva.
The well presented unusual sequence was Siva first teasing Paravati camouflaging himself as a Brahman, primarily to test her love, and then revealing finally who he was. This part was culminated with wedding of Siva with Parvathi in the presence of celestials. Issues that came into discussion in this ballet were ‘Ardha Nareeswara Tatavam’, their union, the power of ‘Siva Shakti’ and some other Siva related happenings.
These being supporting roles, one got to know for the first time how talented the particular artistes were like Jwala Srikala as Parvathi, Smruthi as Lord Siva, Sriharshitha as baby Parvathi and Bhargavi as Himavantha. Sindhura and Vasavi played friends to Parvathi.
The first number of the evening was on ‘Nartana Ganapathi’, a composition penned by Tarigonda Vengamamba, presented by Sindura and Vasavi.
Then there was Siva Sthuti Bho Sambho penned by Dayananda Saraswathi. Gangadhara Sankara Karunakara line was well explained in abhinaya by Malavika Rao.
