Shobana's twin loves—acting and dancing—get equal prominence in Krishna, her dance drama that is to be staged at JT Pac on Friday. Shobana's Kalarpana is bringing this production to Kochiites, early as it has just been performed on five stages so far, twice in Chennai, twice in Bengaluru and once in Dubai. Her previous production, Mayaravan, was staged on 50 stages in a span of five years. What's new in a dance drama, one would wonder. It's in English and has 26 female dancers. Shobana herself dons the role of Krishna. But the music, she says, is Indian, throughout. “There is Hindusthani, folk, and traditional too, but there is nothing traditional in the play, it is not a classical presentation, it is pan Indian,” she says. Kalarpana is her dance school and the rigorous training her students get can be gauged from these shows. The costumes are very different from the classical style as most of her costumes are. The sound will have Resul Pookkutty's expertise beind it. The voices that can be heard for some of the characters include those of Surya, Prabhu, Shabana Azmi, Konkona Sen, Nandita Das. The choreography and direction, of course, is by Shobhana.
