The curves of his lines always brought a curve on the lips of an onlooker. Though Mario Miranda is no longer with us today, his work continues to spread cheer among his fans and other viewers.
While most people remember Miranda as a great cartoonist, not many know he was also an artist who worked in several mediums to create unique works.
In an attempt to showcase this unknown side of his personality The Aks Gallery, in association with the Mario Gallery, is hosting Mario’s World.
Curated by Gerard Da Cunha, a close associate of Miranda, this exhibition shows works that portray France, England, Germany and Portugal, and some of his popular works from Goa.
Miranda’s artistic journey began when he was given colour pencils and paper to stop him from defacing the walls as a child. He went on to conquer the world with his talent, especially through his pocket cartoons with immortal characters like Boss and Miss Fonseca.
“I remember him as a man with an expansive vision,” reminisces Da Cunha, “one who could express his ideas in myriad mediums such as charcoal, colour et al. He was not a typical artist though; in fact, the USP of his works was a combination of art and caricature.”
The present show comprises of about 100 works, including the original pocket cartoons that appeared in newspapers. Culled from the archives of the Mario Gallery (Goa), the European works are a rare treat and a tribute to Mario’s versatility as a fine artist.
“The paintings reflect Mario’s talent in capturing the essence of a place,” explains Da Cunha. “He would capture subtle nuances of the ambience, flavour and attitude, thus making the picture look like a story captured on canvas.”
The exhibition will also comprise merchandise such as postcards, prints, mugs and tiles to popularise good art at non-exorbitant prices. “It’s the festive season and people are always looking out for unique gifts; so what better an option than memorabilia like this, which comes with intrinsic artistic value?” says Da Cunha.
