Meena Das Narayan interprets a woman’s moods against the backdrop of changing seasons
Does one see colours against crystals or crystals against colours? While the answer to that depends on the viewer, Meena Das Narayan’s paintings with its Swarovski embellishments speak of an old-world Indian charm, akin to Rajasthani royalty.
The highlight, however, of Meena’s series of paintings, “Four Seasons in a Haveli” that were on display at the Movenpick Hotel is the woman and her evolving moods represented by the four Indian seasons: spring, summer, monsoon and winter. There are 16 paintings in all, four for each season, representing the woman’s growth — physical, mental and emotional.
Meena feels spring represents the birth of life, where everything seems beautiful (spring also represents youth and regeneration). Summer is the season of love, monsoon is the season of fulfilment with marriage and children, where the woman is able to enjoy life without shyness or awkwardness.
Winter is the season of maturity, where the woman grows older, becomes comfortable in her skin and breaks out of her shackles, she explains. Meena is the founder, publisher and editor of the magazine Gulf Connoisseur.
Meena assigns vivid colours in muted and layered brushstrokes to each of these seasons, with green representing spring, yellow for summer, blue for monsoon and red for winter.
These are the colours of the clothes, and surroundings, typically gardens, windows, palatial balconies, or high-backed chairs as the woman fetches water, spends her time in the lush gardens, or wistfully waits for her beloved. Of course, the jewellery, sparkles in all its Swarovski glory.
Meena’s exhibition also flags off Movenpick’s virtual art gallery. The initiative titled “Project + Art” involves projecting artworks (digital/electronic projections) on the walls of the hotel, visible from the atrium lobby. Meena’s works will be the first to adorn the walls of the hotel digitally.
The exhibition was on view on January 5 and 6. The electronic projections will be on display during select timings at the Movenpick Hotel and Spa Bangalore, 115, Pipeline Road (Near BEL Circle), Gokula Extension.
