A snake-boat race scene, crafted using hay, by Kiran Rajendran, hay craftsman from Kollam, was unveiled by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit on September 2 at the INA Station of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

DMRC had been exhibiting unique works of art from various States at all metro rail stations. The initiative is part of the beautification programme for the Commonwealth games.

It took two months for Kiran Rajendran to finish the eight-foot long and six-foot wide work. As many as 30 lakh pieces of straw, of different shades, had to be used. This is his biggest work.

The DMRC had invited works from painters and craftsmen. The work was chosen from among one hundred entries.

The artist was invited by the government of Germany last year to conduct a straw craft exhibition at the Munich Olympics village. He was awarded the Kalamani and Kalanidhi awards by the Surajkund International Handicrafts Mela.
