At one point of time she had wanted to pursue a career in fashion design but when that didn’t work out, she decided to do her Bachelors in Business Management. Today, she does have her own little enterprise but it isn’t like anything her peers are doing.

Nishka Mehta, all of 21 years of age, is the founder of Art Beat, through which she retails her umpteen works of art.

The chirpy and talented youngster recounts: “Art has always interested me. My sister forcibly enrolled me for drawing classes when I was in fourth standard which I believe, has helped me today. I joined painting classes five years ago, which also helped me make my decision to switch paths. I just knew I wanted to do something different and I made it happen through Art Beat.”

When she started out in April this year, Nishka had only 12 paintings. Being the ambitious girl she is, she decided the best way forward would be to sell her work at a popular flea market and open a Facebook page where she could display her creations. Soon enough the orders came pouring in.

According to Nishka, what makes Art Beat special is that “anything and everything can be customised. Also, art is expensive and there are not too many people ready to shell out that kind of money. So I ensure that all my creations are sold at very affordable prices.”

From coasters, funny miniature frames, fridge magnets and portraits to wall paintings and wedding packages, Nishka makes them all. “It’s nice to see art in articles that can be used in one’s daily life so the concept of coasters and magnets were born.”

About her design inspiration, she says: “I love using ‘famous’ themes/personalities in my work so I’ve made Minion coasters and a Bob Marley painting.”

Despite being just about six months old, the young artist-entrepreneur says setting up Art Beat hasn’t been very tough.

“My family and friends have been very supportive of my decision and work and they even give me ideas for what to make. And there are people who have been kind enough to allow me to exhibit my work in their store/cafe, The Tuck Shop in Koramangala, being one of them. When you enjoy what you do, you never really find it difficult!”

Currently, Nishka sells her work through her Facebook page. Looking ahead, she plans to have her own studio, online store and a whole new range of products that customers can choose from.
