The career guidance session of The Hindu EducationPlus was not without its interesting and tricky questions to the panel of experts at the interactive session in Udupi on Saturday.

To a question by a student, Aarti T. Patel, as to how many years would it take from SSLC and after college to become a surgeon, Head of the Department of Paediatrics at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Dr. Pushpa Kini, said: “It will take seven years to become a surgeon after second year PUC. But don't go by the number of years it will take you to become a surgeon. It is a highly rewarding profession. You will find it very fulfilling. Do not run away from it because it takes seven years. A good surgeon is an asset to the society. A society requires good lawyers, teachers, economists and also good surgeons.”

Ask yourself

Another interesting question asked was: “As it is difficult to get into MBBS, how about doing BAMS?” Dr. Pushpa Kini's answer was: “Ask yourself whether you want to provide relief to the people in society. Providing relief through medicine is a noble task. In the days to come, there may be integration of MBBS and BAMS courses”.

Another tricky question was posed by a student Sneha. She asked “Which branch of engineering is good for girls?”

Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte, C. Shreesha, gave a cryptic reply: “All branches of engineering are good for girls. It is wrong to believe only certain engineering courses are good for them. Girls are even joining mechanical engineering.”
