The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) has announced the introduction of four postgraduate, and two diploma programmes and a doctorate course from this academic year.
Vice-chancellor P. Thangaraju said the four postgraduate courses are M.VSc in Biochemistry, Veterinary Public Health, Livestock Products Technology, and Fish Pathology and Health Management, under Fisheries Science.
The two diploma courses are Diploma in Diversified Poultry Production and Fish Quality Management. The doctorate degree course will be in Veterinary Public Health.
For the Postgraduate Biochemistry course the number of seats will be three to five; for the Veterinary Public Health course it will be two and for the Livestock Products Technology it will be 10 seats. Already, the university has been offering two separate courses — Meat and Dairy Sciences, with five seats in each subject.
As the Indian Council of Agricultural Science wanted the Veterinary universities in the country to club both the subjects and offer a single postgraduate course, TANUVAS has clubbed the two courses and renamed it Livestock Products Technology, which will come into force from this academic year, Dr. Thangaraju said.
The postgraduate diploma in poultry production will be a distance education programme wherein the university plans to admit 30 students per year. Both the master's degree and the diploma course in the fisheries science will be conducted by the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Tuticorin. The doctorate degree in Veterinary and Public Health will have two seats.
New programme
Among the courses, the postgraduate diploma course on ‘Diversified Poultry Production' is introduced as a new subject for the first time in the country, Dr. Thangaraju said. The course will cover rearing of poultry, which includes ducks, geese, emus, ostriches, turkeys and Japanese quails. With the increase in demand for other poultry birds, the new course has been introduced. It will cover in detail the breeding, management, disease prevention and nutrition aspects of these poultry birds. “This course is specifically designed to help the field veterinarians, who can join the course under the distance education programme,” he said.
Apart from the new courses, the university has started a new department — Livestock Business Management.
The department will establish linkages with livestock and poultry industries and train both the undergraduate and postgraduate students in entrepreneurship. More details can be obtained from the university website www.tanuvas.ac.in. Last date for application submission: September 6.
