SHARAN SRINIVAS shares his experiences of studying at Binghamton University.
I have pleasant memories of my college life at the College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University Chennai. Interests in my core subject, Industrial Engineering, motivated me to pursue higher studies in the same field and naturally took me to the U.S. I was lucky enough to get admission at the State University of New York at Binghamton or Binghamton University (BU) with full research project assistantship.
BU is a public institution that was founded in 1946. The campus encompasses 887 acres of land including a nature preserve, complete with a forest and pond where students can hike, bike, and jog. BU is ranked as one of the top schools in the state of New York. In addition, the university is renowned for its sustainability efforts. Binghamton has earned a reputation as the premier public university in the Northeast because of its exceptional, innovative academic programmes, outstanding students, faculty and staff, and the graduation rates.
The Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE) offers seven types of degree at the graduate level. Many students, including the undergraduates, are funded by different sources, unlike other universities. One of the major sources of funding is through the Watson Institute for Systems Excellence (WISE), Institute of Advanced Studies. Funding opportunities eases the student life by reducing the burden of repaying bank loans.
Students, with the help of WISE, receive a valuable opportunity to undertake research at organisations anywhere in the US and conduct innovative industry-based research with manufacturing companies, hospitals and defense organisations. At the same time, they are also provided with full funding which includes both tuition fee and living expenses throughout their graduate (MS & Ph.D.) programme. Students during their scholarly life are exposed to various industries and hence stand a better chance of getting a job compared to students at other universities. Forbes ranked Binghamton first in the Northeast and fourth in the nation among public universities for top starting salaries.
A safe place
Binghamton is a very safe place and is a small university town with a population of less than 50,000 people and the cost of living is very low compared to other universities. Recognised nationally with seven major awards for achievements in internationalisation, Binghamton excels in providing comprehensive opportunities for students to become world citizens.
I strongly encourage students planning to pursue their higher studies in the U.S. to think of the State University of New York at Binghamton for not only the high quality of learning and exposure but also the highest chances of getting a good source of funding.
