I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Dibrugarh in Assam where I also completed my schooling. Later on, I moved to Bangalore for my graduation. As a child, the only obstacle in my life was the problem of electricity. I had to face severe problems during my exams as I had to spend night after night studying under candle light. In my high school I learnt about how energy could be created from the sun, wind, biomass and water and how photovoltaic cells could be used to convert sunlight into electricity.
This kindled in me an interest in eradicating the problem of power generation using renewable sources of energy. Thus, I enrolled in Sri Krishna Institute of Technology, Bangalore.
In order to gain an in-depth knowledge of the field and to get a wider exposure, I decided to go abroad to pursue my master’s degree in Renewable Energy Systems.
I researched about various universities in the U.K. and decided to go to Loughborough University. Their Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST) had a reputation of successfully training engineers for the past 20-odd years.
Global perspective
The M.Sc. Renewable Energy Systems Technology course that I am studying is up-to-date and in- sync with industry requirements. The curriculum has been drafted keeping in mind the current market scenario, not only in U.K. but all around the globe. The professors and the visiting faculty, who have a thorough understanding of the subject, had even discussed about the challenges that India faces in setting up large solar, wind or biogas plants. I am now looking forward to doing some more research in this subject. I believe solar energy has a huge potential, and, so, I am planning study in this sector.
In case this doesn't work out, I may look for a job in this sector, even though my ultimate goal would remain eradicating electricity woes in Assam by helping in setting up renewable energy projects in the State.
The diverse campus culture and the numerous societies make it an unforgettable experience. Although I have lived among diverse cultural and ethnic groups during my graduation period, the experience at Loughborough has been an enriching one as I have met people from different countries across the world.
The campus is student-friendly. Loughborough is a small town with adequate shopping, dining and leisure facilities. The university is well equipped with sports facilities and has a popular student union which is one of the most visited places on weekends. There are departmental stores, a medical centre, restaurants and coffee shops right at the heart of the campus. Green is the word that comes to my mind whenever I take a leisurely stroll around the campus. An evening stroll around the campus relaxes my mind and makes me feel fresh and rejuvenated.
