Gopal Gandhi is IAAS chairman

Gopalkrishna Gandhi is the new chairman of the governing body of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, and president of its society.

Besides Professor Peter Ronald deSouza, Institute Director, the governing body will include Professors D.L. Sheth, former Member of the Backward Classes Commission; Madhavan Palat, Chief Editor, Nehru Memorial Trust; Chetan Singh, Professor of History, Himachal Pradesh University; Lalji Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University; and David Symlieh, Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University.

A former Governor of West Bengal, Mr. Gandhi has held administrative and diplomatic posts. As an IAS officer (1968 batch), he served in Tamil Nadu till 1985.

Later, he was High Commissioner to South Africa and Lesotho, then to Sri Lanka, and Ambassador to Iceland and Norway.
