Science lecture workshop: A two-day lecture workshop on ‘Elevation in sciences’ was held on February 11 and 12 at T. Chennaiah Rangamandira in Kolar. Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, and National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, organised the event in association with Bengaluru-based CMR Institute of Management Studies and Government College for Women, Kolar.

Dipshika Chakravorthy, Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, who was also the convener of the event, said such programmes are being conducted in order to create interest in science among students, particularly girls. It is focused on rural students, she said.

The lectures and interaction on both days helped students and faculty members to know more about various aspects of science and research. Lively presentation of the topics ‘Community behaviour of microbes’ by Dipshika and ‘Enchanting waves’ by Jagadeesh G. of IISc., Bengaluru, enthralled the students. On both days the hall was packed to capacity.

“The participation of girl students in the rural areas was beyond our expectation and is an encouraging sign,” D.B. Beena, event coordinator, said. Speaking to The Hindu , M. Poornima, a final year B.Sc student, said the programme was informative. “It has motivated me to pursue postgraduation studies and enter the research field”, she said.

Nandakumar K.S. of ITC, A.N. Arunkumar and T.S. Rathore of Institute of Wood Science and Technology, N. Nataraja Karaba and Uma Shankar R. were the other resource persons. Deputy Commissioner of Kolar K.V. Thrilokchandra inaugurated the event. CMRIMS Vice-Principal Anandappa and Women’s College Principal Anjanappa spoke.
