Dentaleducation: The Department of Orthodontics, Yenepoya Dental College, and Yenepoya Research Centre, Yenepoya University, organised a continued dental education programme on ‘Perspective in regenerative medicine’ recently.

Adoor Amanulla, Paediatric Oncologist at the Beaumont Health System, Beaumont, Michigan, U.S., inaugurated it. In his address Dr. Amanulla highlighted the revolutionary developments in bone marrow transplantation in treating many diseases. Vice-Chancellor of the university P. Chandramohan, in his presidential address, stressed the importance of stem cell therapy in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. He spoke about the upcoming applications of cell-based therapy. Akhter Husain, Head, Department of Orthodontics, spoke on the significance and scope of regenerative medicine in India.

In the technical session, M. Rahmatulla, founder President, Indian Society for Dental Research, spoke on the role of regenerative medicine in restorative treatment of tissue damage. He explained the potential of stem cell therapy in autoimmune diseases, cancer and diabetes. He emphasised the need to introduce academic courses in regenerative medicine.

S. Sankaranarayana, Director of Mother Cell Regenerative Centre, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, a pioneer in designing the therapeutic regimen for diabetic foot ulcer using dental pulp stem cells, highlighted the recent achievements in cell-based therapy in dentistry and medicine. He emphasised the osteogenic potential of dental pulp stem cells in the treatment of osteoradionecrosis.

Bipasha Bose, Assistant Professor, Yenepoya Research Centre, spoke on pluripotent stem cells, their basic biology and applications in diabetes. Uppala Radhakrishna, Director of Epigenomics at the Beaumont Research Institute, U.S., spoke on the genetic/ epigenetic causes of various developmental disorders. He substantiated the significance of regenerative medicine in the treatment of cleft lip and palate.

B.H. Sripathi Rao, Dean, Dental College, was present.

Radiographers’ conference: The Karnataka Medical Radiographers and Allied Technologists’ Association organised its State-level two-day conference for 2015 at Father Muller Medical College recently.

Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada A.B. Ibrahim, who inaugurated it, said that medical professionals should win the confidence of patients by assuring quality, fair and ethical treatment. It would enhance the standing of the professionals in society.

Stating that radiology had made rapid strides in recent years he said that technologies have made accurate diagnosis possible.

Anand Venugopal, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Medical College Hospitals, Mangaluru, said that medical technologists were in the first line of defence. “Patient safety, empathy and quality control should be the hallmarks of professional commitment,” he said.

Richard Coelho, administrator of Father Muller Medical College Hospital, said making treatment affordable to the common man was the biggest challenge faced by all hospitals now.

Rudolph Ravi D’souza, administrator of FMMC, released the conference souvenir.

Nityananda H., President of KMR & ATA, Mangaluru, welcomed the gathering.

Conference Chairman Suresh H.B., Professor & Head of the Department of Radiology, FMMC, gave the introductory remarks.

Management festival: The Department of Business Administration, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru, organised a management festival for undergraduate students. Events like quiz, mad-ad, best manager, group dance and fashion show were conducted.

Aruna P. Kamath, Principal of SDM College of Business Management, Mangaluru, who inaugurated the function said that management festivals were meant to instil confidence in students.

Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, presided over the function. A.P. Achar, Director, Department of Business Administration, welcomed the gathering.

Seminar: Shree Devi Institute of Technology, Mangaluru, organised a technical seminar on “Big Data” and “Cloud Computing” for computer science students.

G.K. Bhat, Chairman and Managing Director of Techprosoft Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Mangalore, and Tamcyn Fernandes, Software Developer, were the speakers.
