I am in second PUC (PCMB) and am interested in pursuing a UG course in Physics (in particular Astrophysics). But many have said that there is no scope for Basic Sciences and neither are there career opportunities. Please guide me.

The Pure Science courses of Physics, Chemistry, and Zoology are the foundation of applied science courses and programmes. Areas of study such as Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, and Astrophysics have taken birth only because of Pure Sciences.

Hence, you have chartered out the right course by pursuing PUC in the subjects of PCMB. You will not get a course at the graduation level in Astrophysics. You should pursue B.Sc with Physics as one of the subjects. This will help you to branch out at the postgraduation stage to the study of Astrophysics and related subjects. Not all Universities will have specialisation in the field of Astrophysics; some of them may have a paper or two in this area.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) (www.physics.iisc.ernet.in) and the Indian Institute of Astro Physics (IIAP) (www.iiap.res.in) will be surely on your list of educational institutions. The IIAP is a premier institute that has devoted itself to research in Astro Physics, Astronomy and related areas of Physics. Both IISc. and IIAP are centres of excellence.

Hence, on completion of PUC, you will have to pursue B.Sc from a college and move towards postgraduation and pursue research to ensure a successful career. A Ph.D. will be mandatory to move into various domains of the area of study.

I have completed B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from VTU and would like to pursue MS in Germany. I would like to have information on various institutions offering this course.

I completed BBA (business administration) in 2006 and have three years of experience in market research. I had taken a break to help my family in my village set up a poultry. I want to get back to work. I am also looking to pursue a certificate programme that would be an add-on in my career profile and help me grab a good job. I have heard about MICA certification in Market Research and Data Analytics. Could you advise me regarding the prospects of this programme? Is there any other relevant online programme that I can pursue?

Data Analytics is an area of specialisation in the corporate world today. There are subject matter experts (SME) who are focusing on data and its management on a continuous basis. MICA conducts a one-year certificate programme in Market Research and Data Analytics, which is an online course for students to foster objective data analysis strategies and to apply critical thinking skills to data analysis, besides helping to generate and validate solutions to a problem and communicate the findings. The programme helps the student to build a foundation in Market Research and Data Analytics at entry and mid-levels.

The focus in on application of data analytical tools which help in strategic decision making. The usage of information technology and software (SAS and SPSS) is key to the functioning, which helps the learner to understand the nuances in a better way. For more details you can contact Vina Vani (email: vani@micamail.in), Programme Director, MICA, Ahmedabad- 380058.

Also available is the Executive Programme in Business Analytics of the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata (IIMC) which is a one-year programme offered on the online platform by Hughes Global Education (www.hugheseducation.com). Participants are exposed to state-of-the-art tools and techniques of analytics, besides discussion on topics such as Data Mining, Artificial Intelligence, Soft Computing, Data Envelopment Analysis, Design of Experiments, Survey Sampling, Statistical Inference, Investment Management, Financial Modelling for Risk Management, Advanced Marketing Research etc.

The students get an opportunity to visit the IIMC and interact with professors besides attending on the online platform from centres across India on a real-time mode.

Whilst pursuing the programme, you can join any of the market research firms that are also into data analytics and ensure qualitative learning which will catapult you to the corporate world.
