Lecture: The teaching faculty as well as students in Kolar had an opportunity to interact with and listen to a lecture by Kanchi K. Gandhi, senior botanical scientist at Harvard University, U.S., recently. The Kolar Research Foundation organised the talk on “Challenges before the field of research and remedies.” Mr. Gandhi, who studied upto postgraduation and served in Bangalore, is the senior nomenclature registrar of Harvard University and won the Distinguished Service Award of the American Association of Plant Taxonomists in 2010.
In his talk, Mr. Gandhi underlined the need for education based on promoting creativity among students in order to make them useful human resources in the future. “An education system relying on memorising the subject as practised in India will not serve the purpose. Logical understanding of any subject will help students learn it easily and make an analytical study of it.” He also answered many questions raised by the audience. MBA course: The School of Management, Manipal University (formerly Manipal Institute of Management) has started accepting applications for its sectoral MBA in Healthcare Management slated to begin from July 2014.
This two-year programme, based on the trimester pattern, aims to cater to the requirement for management professionals in the healthcare sector.
The programme, designed in consultation with academicians and experts from the healthcare industry, will be overseen by a Board of Studies which, besides experienced educators from academia, also includes a senior professional from the healthcare industry.
The batch size for the programme is kept at 30 to ensure effective instruction and learning.
The programme is open to students with a graduate degree in any discipline from a recognised University and selection will be based on the applicant’s academic record and performance in a group discussion / interview.
With the course fees pegged at Rs. 4.5 lakh, the programme is an attractive education avenue for students with a medical/paramedical background. - Ganesh Prabhu

Blood donation: Students and teachers of Mangalore University Blood Donors’ Group donated blood at a camp on the university campus at Mangalagangotri recently. In all, 68 students donated blood apart from some teachers.
The Department of Business Administration and Mass Communication & Journalism (MCJ), in association with the Student’s Council, organised the camp.
Ahead of the camp a week-long campaign with a tagline “You don’t have to be a doctor to save lives. Donate blood” had been launched on the campus to inspire students to donate blood.
“When I was in need of blood as a child, my parents had a hard time to find it as my blood group is ‘B’ negative. This time, I decided to donate blood although my classmates did not encourage me as I am slim,” said Navya, a donor.
More than 200 names have been registered in the group with some of them having rare blood groups, according to G.P. Shivaram, chairman, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism.
The Vice-Chancellor, T.C Shivashankara Murthy, inaugurated the camp.
Competitions: Karavali Institute of Technology, Neermarga, organised an inter-collegiate festival (competitions) titled ‘Kaizen-2014’ recently. Inaugurating the competitions Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, said that the youth have a greater responsibility in nation building. Referring to the brain drain he asked youth to work for the country. S. Ganesh Rao, founder and managing trustee of GR Education Trust which manages the college, asked students to develop positive thinking.
Workshop: The Department of Civil Engineering, Mangalore Institute of Technology and Engineering (MITE), Moodbidri, organised a workshop on ‘Civil engineering challenges in the 21st century’ recently. It was organised in association with CAFET-INNOVA Technical Society, Hyderabad, and Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (INDIA), Mangalore Centre.
Technical festival: Shree Devi Institute of Technology, Kenjar, organised a technical and cultural festival ‘Shree Devi Sambhram – 2014’. E.S. Chakravarthy, Centre Head, TCS Bangalore, inaugurated it.
Vinay Hegde, Chancellor, Nitte University, who presided, advised students to be inspired by great personalities. Chairman of Shree Devi Education Trust A. Sadananda Shetty welcomed the gathering.
Inaugurated: The association of M.Tech. students of Srinivas Institute of Technology, AMIT, was inaugurated recently. Shrinivasa Mayya D., principal of the college, urged students to get involved in the activities of the association.
Conference: M.V. Shetty College of Nursing, Vidyanagar-Kavoor, organised a conference on ‘Career transition challenge, the change’ recently. About 230 delegates participated.
