Having introduced Ph.D. programme in off-campus mode, facilitating hundreds of candidates from all over South India to obtain doctoral degrees, the Dravidian University at Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh is keen to enrol students in larger numbers from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for its regular M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes.
According to University sources, the State government of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned four teaching posts for strengthening of teaching and research in the Department of Tamil. The government has so far released Rs. 2 crore to the department for creating infrastructure.
To increase number of students for PG programme in Tamil, as well as M.Phil and Ph.D., the government also introduced a special scholarship scheme that covers boarding and lodging expenses for regular students.
Those belonging to backward, most backward and scheduled castes, and scheduled tribes whose annual parental income does not exceed Rs. 1 lakh are eligible to apply for the scholarship, informed R. Vivekanandagopal, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Tamil & Translation Studies.
The Dravidian University in Chittoor district, with an exclusive focus on Dravidiology, was an outcome of the vision of Dr. Vadaseri Iyyamperumal Subramoniam, Lingustics Professor, to safeguard and preserve the history, culture and language tradition of the south, binding the four States, Dr. Vivekanandagopal said, adding that benefits of the university programmes have to be derived by eligible candidates hailing from economically weaker sections of the society.
