What's to love?
Asian Academy of Film and Television couldn't have had a better address than Film City, the hub of all the major new channels. As you enter the college, a large idol of Lord Shiva greets you, somehow giving one the impression of a film set. The beautiful green lawns make things picturesque. The college, run by Marwah Studios, was set up 17 years ago.
“Every month there are some festivals or film screenings organised on the college campus, which make the environment here lively instead of boring. Film actors keep visiting the college for workshops and other events. Also, we have visiting faculty from abroad, with whom we love to interact,” says Chitra, a first-year student.
The college has two buildings, of three and five storeys respectively, with huge studios where students shoot their films. Students prefer to relax in the classrooms, as they are air-conditioned. “Students go mad when any well-known celebrity turns up, like when Salman Khan visited our college for a workshop recently. Studying here is fun,” says Kashyap from the Editing Department.
What's not to be?
The canteen area is nice to be in but when it comes to the canteen food one cannot say the same. “The food served here is mediocre,” says Sakshi, another first-year student of Editing. Consequently, on campus, most end up depending on instant noodles and coffee. “Most of the time the canteen is occupied due to film shootings and, hence, we are left with no option but the staircase to sit on, which now has become our second-best hangout zone,” laughs Sakshi.
Alternatives
Let down by the canteen food, students find solace in the street vendors situated at every corner of Film City serving both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, which is many times better and more satisfying than the college canteen “When it comes to celebrating a birthday, the first things that come to mind are the Centrestage or Great India Place malls, which are at a walking distance from here,” merrily adds a student from the Production Department. “We have CCDs, a momo corner and an ice-cream parlour behind our college, which we visit when heat or hunger becomes unbearable,” she adds.
