XLRI triumphs in sports meet

Xavier School of Management (XLRI) students were crowned champions in the recently hosted ‘XLerate 2014’, a sports festival for one-year MBA students across India, at XLRI Campus, Jamshedpur. About 500 students from premier management institutes across India, such as IIM Calcutta, Great Lakes Chennai and SP Jain, Mumbai, took part. Great Lakes, Chennai, were the runners-up.

Former CEC’s call “Ethics and business is like oil and water in India, they don’t mix,” N. Gopalaswami IAS (Retd.), former Chief Election Commissioner, said. He was addressing MBA students of Sathyabama University on ‘Ethics in Business’ recently. Indian business houses expect more loyalty than ethical behaviour on the part of the employees, he said. “Absolute loyalty is an oppressive doctrine and it leads to dictatorship.” He said loyalty is relevant but it has to be moderated by a sense of right or wrong.

An employee should be able to stand up against unfair practices of the management and it calls for personal standards of integrity on the part of every individual employee and the willingness to go beyond one’s personal interest. He hastened to add that standing up against unethical practices need not be thought of as an anti-company stand; it also means the individual is for the long-term welfare of the company.

He persuaded the students to ensure their name is in the electoral role and coaxed them to exercise their franchise without fail.
