Number of engineering seats allotted crosses 1 lakh

The number of candidates allotted seats in the engineering counselling process crossed one lakh on Thursday.

This is the first time the number of allotments has crossed the one lakh figure, said V. Rhymend Uthariaraj, secretary, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions 2010.

Academic counselling

A total of 96,913 candidates had been allotted seats under the academic counselling and under the sports and the physically handicapped quotas. Under vocational counselling, 3,781 candidates have been allotted seats taking the total to 1,00,694, Dr. Uthariaraj said.

In 2007, 56,041 candidates were allotted seats through counselling.

The number rose to 78,275 in 2008 and further to 83,556 in 2009, he added. This year, over 60 per cent of the candidates allotted seats had availed themselves of the tuition waiver scheme for first generation graduates.

All seats in the government and government aided colleges have been filled and 32 Tamil medium seats in Anna University's constituent colleges – 15 in Civil and 17 in Mechanical Engineering remain.
