Study in Europe at an Indian cost is the buzz word. With fees ranging between Rs. 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh and upwards, higher studies in Latvia is among the most cost effective in Europe.
The living expenses come to around Rs. 15,000 every month, but students can cover their expenses by working 20 hours a week, as per Latvian legislation. Most of the universities provide accommodation facilities, besides giving students facilities for making their own meals.
Although, there are no campus placements, universities have compulsory internship programmes.
“This gives students the opportunity to interact with potential employers and they can apply for jobs in the last semester, and have their student visa converted to work visa through their potential employer,” says V. Sundar, lecturer at Turiba University.
Sundar adds that there are career centres in Universities such as Turiba, which also has an alumni network, through which contact with employers for jobs can be facilitated.
Job opportunities are somewhat limited in Latvia because of language constraints, but one has the option of looking for opportunities in the rest of Europe, as per Schengen.
Although Latvian and Russian are primarily spoke in Latvia, there are over 100 programmes offered in English. Paid internships are a compulsory constituent of postgraduate degrees. Students can also go for exchange programmes in universities in the rest of Europe.
A huge transportation hub, specialised courses are offered in logistics and supply-chain management.
Academic programmes
Courses ranging from aviation transport to heat power and heat engineering, and medical engineering and physics are offered at the Riga Technical University.
Established in 1862, this university won a gold medal from World Intellectual Property Organisation for inventing amber thread which became popular at Fashion School of Versace. Scientists in this university have tested composition material that was used in aircraft of Airbus, another of its accomplishments. For those interested in social sciences, University of Latvia offers unique courses such as Baltic Sea Region Studies, International migration and social cohesion, Orientalistics, German philology, et al.
