Do films, television and new media entice you? Are you interested in direction, production, editing, cinematography, screenwriting of audio-visual production, be it films, television or new media? Then the dual degree by Manipal University and EICAR, the International Film and Television School, Paris, France, is the right course for you.
Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC), a constituent of Manipal University, in collaboration with EICAR, is launching the Master's Programme in Film Art and Filmmaking from the academic year 2011.
According to the MIC Director, Varadesh Hiregange, the common goal of this programme – one year in MIC and one year in EICAR, Paris — is to prepare students to find employment in one of the five major disciplines – directing, production, editing, cinematography, screenwriting — of audio-visual productions.
EICAR has a great legacy in terms of the medium of film, from the birth of the medium to the present day. Access to some of the definitive spaces, state-of-the-art film studios, museums, exhibitions and screenings will be definite instruments in the holistic grooming of a student.
In the first year at MIC, students will learn the medium from a socio-cultural-historic-economic-critical perspective with equal emphasis on hands-on training in audio-visual production in the digital video format. In the second year at EICAR, students will specialise in direction, screenwriting, cinematography or editing. “The basic grounding course will be at MIC. New media is of vital importance in this age of convergence,” Prof. Hiregange said.
On successful completion of the course, students would be awarded the degrees of Master of Arts in Film Art by Manipal University and Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking accredited by the European Accreditation Board of Higher Education Schools (EABHES).
Job prospects
Pro Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University H. Vinod Bhat told The Hindu that there were very few institutes in the country which provided a Master's degree course in Film Art and Filmmaking. The prospects of the students doing this course were bright. “They will get to work in a commercial studio in Paris. This will give them practical training, which will make them readily employable when they get their master's degree.”
“The students have a chance of getting employment both in India and France,” Prof. Hiregange added.
Eligibility
The candidate should have completed a bachelor degree course in any stream (of three or more years' duration after the 10+2 examination) from any recognised university, having secured not less than 50 per cent marks. The tuition fee for the first year at MIC is Rs. 2 lakh, and for the second year at Paris would depend on the fee structure applicable there.
