The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Delhi, has posted an impressive 98 per cent placement among its first batch of students who passed out of the institute in 2012 and these students had got placed in reputed companies with an average salary package of Rs.10 lakh per annum.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new campus of IIIT Delhi at Okhla on Monday, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said she was happy with the way the institute, which was set up as a State university, has shaped up. She said intake of students by this premier institute was expected to double on completion of second phase of its campus construction at Okhla.
Ms. Dikshit said at present there are 410 students enrolled in B. Tech, 110 in M. Tech and 40 in Ph.D. courses and their number is expected to double in the next three years. She also announced that work on second phase of the institute would be taken up soon at a cost of Rs.250 crore.
Ms. Dikshit said plans have also been drawn up to construct an iconic foot over bridge to connect the new permanent campus of IIIT Delhi with the Okhla metro station. The FOB would be constructed over the existing green cover.
“The Okhla metro station is the closest to the campus but the students have to use the Govindpuri metro station which is about 1.5 km away. With the commissioning of the FOB, the campus would come closer to the Delhi Metro service,’’ she said.
The Chief Minister expressed her pleasure at the relocation of IIIT Delhi, which was established as a State university in 2008 and was operating from the premises of NSIT Dwarka, to its own “green, sprawling and energy efficient building’’ in Okhla.
Ms. Dikshit said the Government was keen to develop the Institute as a world class centre for information technology and allied fields by offering the highly innovative courses to enable students to become innovators and creators of new products.
She said though while drafting the Bill of this State university the Delhi Government had ensured full autonomy for the institute, it was nevertheless assisting it in acquiring modern infrastructure and resources to become the best in its field. Ms. Dikshit also declared that Delhi Government schools students would be imparted free education in this institute.
