Delay in IIT seats allotment causes anxiety

The delay in the allotment of seats in IITs is forcing many students to take up admissions in deemed universities where admission processes conclude in next two weeks.

The counselling website had been opened for the shortlisted candidates from May 18, giving them a chance to opt the courses of their choice. The first allotment was scheduled on Thursday.

“The results were first postponed to Thursday midnight. The JEE website, now, says the results have been delayed. They have not given the time and day the results will be declared. This is causing a lot of anxiety,” said R. Prathap, a student.

Students say they have been checking the website "almost every minute" since Thursday, anticipating the results. Many aspirants fear if the first list is delayed, there might be subsequent delays in the second and third list too. “Some of us are hopeful that we will get into the IITs but we are not sure about that. If the allotment is done fast, we can save a lot of money. Now it is becoming imperative to book a seat elsewhere even as you wait for the IIT results, said a students who has an All India Rank of around 2,700

“With the economy doing bad, many of us prefer core branches while some are sticking to computer science subjects. We cannot anticipate the trend so many students who have ranks beyond 1,000 are getting a little jittery,” he added.

Meanwhile deemed universities such as SRM University, Amrita and VIT University are seen by many students as a safe option with students getting the opportunity to choose from a variety of courses.

For many students who want to get only into the IITs and NITs, the delay means added work. The AIEEE counselling that starts on Saturday is likely to be attended by more students, even those who are mostly sure of finding a seat in the IITs. “I don’t want to go outside the State. It is either IIT madras or NIT Trichy. I was hoping I would get through IIT Madras and so I would not need to consider NIT but now I will at least fill the AIEEE form,” said Aayush, a student.

Sources believe the delay comes after the Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stay the Andhra Pradesh High Court judgement that quashed the 4.5 percent quota for minorities. Earlier, the Centre had introduced the quota exclusively for the minorities and sought to provide admission to at least 325 minority candidates from the Muslim and converted Christian communities in the IITs.

There are a total of 9,647 seats in different IITs including 4,722 for the general category students. A total 17,464 candidates were shortlisted for counselling this year.
