Manipal varsity offers PG degree in exercise and sports science

For those aspiring to train sportspersons or hoping to be exercise and sports scientists, the M.Sc. in Exercise and Sports Science is just the course meant for you.

The School of Allied Health Sciences, Manipal University, in association with the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), New Zealand, is offering a two-year postgraduate degree — M.Sc. in Exercise and Sports Science — from the current academic year.

Since it is a dual degree twinning programme, students will study the first year at Manipal University and the second year at AUT in New Zealand.

Candidates who have done their graduation in physiotherapy, occupational therapy and exercise and sports science are eligible for this course. The last date for admission is August 29 and classes will begin from September 2.

Fiddy Davis, Course Coordinator, said that since the course is being introduced this year, the students will be selected through an interview. From next year onwards, an entrance test will be conducted.

“All trainers, exercise physiotherapists and bio-mechanists are normally from Western countries. Due to our course, after a few years, we expect India to have more exercise and sports scientists,” Dr. Davis said.

Job opportunities

With regard to career opportunities, those completing this course can hope to be exercise and sports scientists in sports medicine centres, professional organisations, corporate fitness/wellness industries and occupational health.

They could join as support staff for national and international teams. They can do research in health and human performance. They can aim at pursuing a Ph.D. in exercise-related subjects such as kinesiology, movement analysis and exercise physiology.

“A student who completes this course can expect a minimum salary of Rs. 50,000 per month and it will be definitely more in foreign countries,” Dr. Davis said.

On completion of the course, in addition to the M.Sc. in Exercise and Sports Science degree from Manipal University, the students will also get a Master of Sport and Exercise from AUT.

The course fee is Rs. 3 lakh plus 31,780 New Zealand dollars. In addition, students will have to bear visa application fee, air fare and insurance. For more details, log on to www.manipal.edu or call Dr. Fiddy Davis on 094482 52299.
