I am a second-year student of the B.Tech. course in computer science and engineering. I would like to know about the scope of doing the M.Tech. course in the discipline. Also let me know the specialisations and study facilities. When can I start attempting the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)?

To pave the way for a good career, you need to score high marks in the B.Tech. course. During the final year of the course, take GATE, a prerequisite to join M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes with scholarships and fellowships. The postgraduate and doctoral qualifications will help to land top jobs in the competitive corporate job environment.

Several engineering colleges and institutes in India offer the M.Tech. course in computer science and engineering. Engineering graduates in computer science or certain other branches with at least 60 per cent marks in aggregate and a valid GATE score may apply for admission.

A high GATE score will help you win a scholarship from the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. In admission interviews, 70 per cent weight is given to this score and 30 per cent to academic merit. Top institutes such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) admit only those with a high GATE score.

In Tamil Nadu, admission to ME and M.Tech. programmes is done through a single-window system based on the marks in the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET).
