Despite repeated announcements from the State’s Higher Education Department that it is mandatory for private engineering colleges to disclose their admission details for this year, including the fee collected, only 97 colleges, of the nearly 200, have made public this information so far.
At least 10 of them have flouted the Rs. 20,000 ceiling for excess fee prescribed by the government, with some of them even collecting more than Rs. 10,000 in addition to this amount.

According to the documents submitted to the Department of Technical Education (DTE), all of which are on the DTE website, many colleges have taken what they call ‘college fees’ just within the prescribed ceiling — even Rs. 19, 050. While some of them have collected amounts around Rs. 20,000, some have declared having collected excess fee ranging from Rs. 23,000 to as high as Rs. 33,280. A few colleges have also collected different amounts from different students as college fee.
The various subheads under which the fee collected have been divided include ‘university fee’ or ‘VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) fee’, ‘miscellaneous fee’, ‘other amenities’ and ‘academic amenities’.
S.K. Saidapur, who heads the one-man regulatory and monitoring committee to oversee professional course admissions, said the committee had already written to some of the colleges that had charged extra.
“We will write to all the colleges that have charged more,” he added.
