Seminar on water
Manrita, the social sciences forum of Jyoti Nivas College, Bangalore, recently held a two-day State-level seminar on “Water cooperation, conservation and management, issues and challenges in the 21st Century”. The chief guest for the inaugural function was Leo F. Saldanha, Coordinator of the Environment Support Group, Bangalore.
Free scholarships
The 40th annual scholarship programme conducted by Bazm-e-Niswan gave away scholarships worth Rs. 85 lakh to 2,800 deserving underprivileged girl students at Sampad House recently. The scheme provided scholarships for meritorious but economically weak students to pursue higher education. The event was inaugurated by Irfan Kareem, chief guest for the function. The Bazm-e-Niswan charitable trust was established for the uplift of women in 1974.
“Women are the architects of society, each one of you has rights for your very survival. Education is an inevitable part of the survival and it is not exclusive to any particular class, or group, and everyone is entitled to right to education,” said Mr. Kareem. The trust distributed the scholarships to pursue professional courses such as medicine and engineering.
CMAT crash course
The Department of Management Studies & Research Centre, BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore, will be conducting coaching classes for CMAT in September.
This crash course conducted by the faculty at of BMSCE will be spread over 60 hours from August 19 to September 20 and will cover the four core components of the test — Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, and General Awareness. These classes will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays on the college campus on Bull Temple Road.

IET Job Fair
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has announced the dates for The IET Advantage Job Fair 2013. The two-day event, open to engineering students (students, fresh graduates and young professionals with 1- 6 years’ experience) from across India will be held on September 21 and 22 at KCG College of Technology, Chennai.
Full-time engineering students/ graduate engineers of AICTE-approved engineering streams from across the nation are eligible to apply for the fair. The applicants will be selected through a three-step filtering process that includes an online shortlisting process, an aptitude test and a technical evaluation round. The aptitude test will be held across 14 colleges in India. Shortlisted candidates from the aptitude test will be assessed for their technical skills and knowledge of their engineering stream through a Technical Talent Test.

Policy Hackathon
The second IIMB Policy Hackathon that concluded recently at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) saw 23 teams use nationally representative data from the Census and the National Sample Survey Organisation to look at very specific policy issues in the health, education, sanitation, poverty and a range of other domains. The evaluation team comprised Varsha Joshi (Director, Census Operations, Registrar General of India), Sridhar Pabbisetty (Consultant, Government of Karnataka), Hema Swaminathan (Assistant Professor, Centre for Public Policy, IIM-B) and Arnab Mukherji (Assistant Professor, Centre for Public Policy, IIM-B).
Team Cloud, comprising Vipul Mathur, Ramprasad Alva, Avadhooth Jathar and Purnima Prakash, won the Hackathon by showing that the government’s electrification programme has a crowding-in effect of personal expenditure on education (tuition, books, newspapers, etc.).
Short course at IIHS
Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), in association with UNESCO and Indian Heritage Cities Network (IHCN), has announced a short course in Protecting and Managing Living Urban Heritage, which focuses on understanding how to address conservation issues in urban living heritage spaces. Recycled Regatta
Canadian International School, Bangalore, initiated a first-of-its kind event — ‘Recycled Regatta’ — recently on its campus. It was an all-day event for students in classes 6 to 11. Students created boats made entirely out of recycled materials and capable of holding a student who had to race the floatable unit across the pool.
