With the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University laying emphasis on increasing the capacity among health and allied health professionals, considering the huge gap between demand and supply, a number of institutions have begun offering specialised, job-oriented courses in the sector.
Psycho-oncology
The College of Oncological Sciences at the Cancer Institute (WIA) has started an M. Phil. programme in psycho-oncology, at the Department of Psycho-oncology, affiliated to the University of Madras, this academic year. With the growing incidence of cancer there is a huge need for well-trained professionals to provide psychological support and rehabilitative care for patients.
The aim of this course is to prepare the trainee to function as a qualified professional psycho-oncologist in the areas of mental and physical health, for individuals who are affected by or related in any way with cancer.
The M.Phil in psycho-oncology is a one year full-time clinical training course with ample practicum and apprenticeship opportunities. The entry requirement for the course is an M.A. / M. Sc. degree in Psychology from a university recognised by the UGC with a minimum of 55 per cent marks in aggregate. For the SC/ST category, minimum of 50 per cent marks in aggregate is essential, as per GOI. Students will be admitted to the course based on their performance on a written test and an interview conducted by a selection committee.

Transplant co-ordination
MOHAN Foundation, an NGO working in the area of promoting organ transplantation, is now offering a one-year diploma programme in Transplant Coordination & Grief Counselling, in association with Indira Gandhi National Open University.
Graduates in the Sciences, Social Work, Medical Psychology, Sociology, Physiotherapy as well as candidates with a Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery are eligible to apply. In addition, graduates in any field with good communication skills and an interest in the area of organ donation can do the course.
The diploma programme involves training in counselling families of ‘brain dead' patients to donate organs and coordinating the entire process of organ donation, retrieval and transplantation.
At the end of the programme, every successful participant will be in a position to work as the key resource person to spearhead transplant-related activities. Placement guidance will also be provided.

Ophthalmic Nursing &Medical Lab Technology
Sankara Nethralaya and its Medical Research Foundation are inviting applications from successful Plus Two candidates for two courses: Diploma in Ophthalmic Nursing, and B.Sc in Medical Lab Technology.
The Opthalmic Nursing diploma course will enable students to gain skills and knowledge that will find them jobs attending to the eye care of patients in the ward, operation theatre and ICU. The bare minimum qualification is a pass in Plus Two (Central of State board), with high marks in Biology/Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Students who are between 17 - 20 years as on May 1, 2011 can apply.
The same category of students can even apply for the three-year B.Sc. degree course in Ophthalmic Nursing and Medical Lab Technology. Hands-on training will be provided to students in analysing human blood, tissue, and other fluids samples.
