Coal India Limited (CIL) will provide “special” scholarship to 100 meritorious students from the below poverty line and offer them jobs as management trainee later in the company.

Another 25 scholarships will be offered to those whose land were acquired by the CIL and left with no source of income.

“The scheme will be launched from 2010-11 fiscal year. Under the scheme, every year 100 students from the BPL category will be given financial help to undergo degree courses at government engineering and medical colleges, IITs and NITs,” Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal told PTI today. It will also include costs of accommodation at hostels, he added.

After completion of courses, these students will be given the option to join as management trainees in CIL, Mr. Jaiswal said, adding they could also work in the company.

When asked on the selection process for such students, the Minister said eligible candidates would be selected in a transparent manner following publishing of newspaper advertisements throughout the country.

Same facilities would be annually provided to another 25 students who came from families displaced by land acquisitions by the CIL and were not yet offered job in the company, he added.
