I recently got to know that the Government is providing scholarship for SC students. I have scored 82% in B.A. and 66% in M.A. (English Literature). Please guide me as to what specialisation I can pursue in master’s/Ph.D. if I get an opportunity in India or overseas.

In regards to scholarships which are announced from time to time, you will have to apply to the relevant department/institution, based on the eligibility criterion. You should, based on the studies that you have pursued thus far, continue with a research programme. However, you should also consider what you would achieve by doing the same. If you have decided to pursue a course of action, you should plan and apply a strategy to ensure success. Teaching is one of the best options in the Language profession.

At the higher education level (undergraduate and postgraduate), a Ph.D. is mandatory. However, if you are keen to pursue education at the school level and Intermediate, then a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) will fetch you good jobs. Pursuing Ph.D. in an area of relevance will help you to conduct research. Most universities offer Ph.D. in English Literature; you should start your efforts from the university/institute where you have completed postgraduation.

I have completed B.Sc (Microbiology) and pursued MBA in Supply Chain Management from Sikkim Manipal University (Correspondence). I have five years of work experience in the BPO industry but am not happy and seek opportunities to work in other organisations. I would like to move to IT, FMCG and even government jobs; even to the Army and Air Force. If I need to pursue additional programmes I would like to do the same. Please guide me.

The field of Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Logistics has been growing for the past decade in India. Opportunities are available in plenty; but there is sure gap in the demand and supply of SCM human capital.

Your current experience in SCM in the BPO segment will surely add value for you to move to regular SCM and Logistics jobs in different companies. However, you will have to start as an Executive and move up the ladder. The BPO experience will no doubt create an opportunity to enter, but you will have to get to the nuances of operations.

On the job front, for opportunities in the Army and Air Force you should take up the Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) conducted by the UPSC (www.upsc.gov.in) provided you fulfil the eligibility criteria.

Besides, if you have the time and space you should attend short-term certificate programmes conducted by the Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM), a professional body of SCM and Logistics professionals. The programmes ensure you are able to interact with the specialists and learn the finer aspects of the business.

IIMM also has a list of opportunities in the SCM segment which will help you to discuss with the prospective employers. You can contact IIMM Chennai Branch: Chairman (V Seetharaman), IIMM, 4th Floor, Chateau D Ampa, 110 (#37), Nelson Manickam Road, Aminjikarai, Chennai-600029. Ph: 044-23742195. Email: iimmchennai@gmail.com

Readers who have similar queries from Bangalore can contact D. Subramani, Chairman, IIMM, 304, A-Wing, 3rd Floor, Mittal Tower, 6, M.G. Road, Bangalore-560001. Ph: 25327251. Email: iimmbg@airtelmail.in

I am in Class XI (CBSE) and have taken PCMB. I have a liking for Biology and Chemistry and would like to pursue studies further. Please provide me the options available in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. I would like to have information in both the Pure and Applied Sciences category and also opportunities in India and abroad.

via email

Your interest in Biology (Botany and Zoology) and Chemistry will surely help you to join the B.Sc programme where the combination of Chemistry, Botany and Zoology (CBZ) will provide many opportunities to explore the Pure Sciences. You can dabble in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Environmental Science and others areas like Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences, Food Technology, Home Science and even Wildlife. Moving from Pure Sciences to Applied Sciences will surely help you to get to the nuances and benefit from better opportunities.

Without a research qualification you will not be able to move up the hierarchy. Besides research in the areas mentioned, you can also pursue teaching and consulting jobs in specific domains. The growth no doubt is slow and steady, but you will reach the goal, based on your interest. The research bodies under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) (www.csir.res.in) and other bodies under various Departments and Ministries do open up a multitude of opportunities.

I want to know if the Madras School of Economics conducts any programme in Insurance Management and Actuarial Science. I have completed B.A. Economics and dropped out of M.A. Economics due to various reasons; and am currently working for a private insurance firm as operations executive.
